How to write a plumbing estimate

In plumbing, what you can't see (pipes inside the wall, the condition of old lines) causes the most disputes. A clear estimate says what you'll do, what you'll replace and what happens if something else turns up.

Repair or installation: two ways to quote

For an installation (a new bathroom, a water heater) you can detail everything upfront. For a repair, quote the diagnosis and the expected fix, and state that if opening up reveals another problem, it will be quoted separately.

What to include

Permits and gas work

If the job requires a permit, a licensed gas fitter or a utility inspection, list it as a separate item and explain the timing: the client needs to know it doesn't depend only on you.

Example: kitchen faucet and supply lines replacement

Sample prices: adjust them to your area and your costs.

Frequently asked questions

Should I charge for the service call if they don't hire me?

It's common and reasonable, especially if it includes a diagnosis. Just say so before you go and, if you get the job, state whether the fee is credited.

What if I find another problem once I open things up?

Stop, show the client what you found and send an additional estimate before continuing. If your original estimate already said so, there's no dispute.
